9 I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.
10 Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
11 He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.
12 Behold, in this thou art not just: I will answer thee, that God is greater than man.
13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters. [1]
14 For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.
15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;
16 Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction, [2]
17 That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. [3]
18 He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword. [4]
19 He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain :
20 So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty food. [5]
21 His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.
22 Yea, his soul draweth near to the grave, and his life to the destroyers.
23 If there is a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man his uprightness:
24 Then he is gracious to him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom. [6]
25 His flesh shall be fresher than a child’s: he shall return to the days of his youth: [7]
26 He shall pray to God, and he will be favourable to him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render to man his righteousness.
27 He looketh upon men, and if any shall say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not; [8]
28 He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light. [9]
29 Lo, all these things God often worketh with man, [10]
30 To bring back his soul from the pit, to be enlightened with the light of the living.
31 Mark well, O Job, hearken to me: hold thy peace, and I will speak.
32 If thou hast any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify thee.
33 If not, hearken to me: hold thy peace, and I shall teach thee wisdom.
CHAP. 34.
1 Elihu accuseth Job for charging God with injustice. 10 God omnipotent cannot be unjust. 31 Man must humble himself unto God. 34 Elihu reproveth Job.
Furthermore Elihu answered and said,
2 Hear my words, O ye wise men ; and give ear to me, ye that have knowledge.
3 For the ear trieth words, as the mouth tasteth food. [11]
4 Let us choose for ourselves what is right: let us know among ourselves what is good.
5 For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment.
6 Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression. [12]
7 What man is like Job, who drinketh up scorning like water?
8 Who goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men.
9 For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.
10 Therefore hearken to me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. [13]
11 For the work of a man he shall render to him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.
12 Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.
13 Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world? [14]
14 If he should set his heart upon man, if he should gather to himself his spirit and his breath; [15]
15 All flesh would perish together, and man would turn again to dust.
16 If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.
17 Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? [16]
18 Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
19 How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.
20 In a moment they shall die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. [17]
21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings.
22 There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23 For he will not lay upon man more than right ; that he should enter into judgment with God. [18]
24 He shall break in pieces mighty men without number, and set others in their stead. [19]
25 Therefore he knoweth their works, and he overturneth them in the night, so that they are destroyed. [20]
26 He striketh them as wicked men in the open sight of others; [21]
27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways: [22]
28 So that they cause the cry of the poor to come to him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted.
29 When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
30 That the hypocrite may not reign, lest the people should be ensnared.
31 Surely hast any one said to God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more :
32 That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
33 Should it be according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou shalt refuse, or whether thou shalt choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest. [23]
34 Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken to me. [24]
35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.
36 My desire is that Job may be tried to the end because of his answers for wicked men. [25]
37 For he addeth rebellion to his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
CHAP. 35.
1 Comparison is not to be made with God, because our good or evil cannot extend unto him. 9 Many cry in their afflictions, but are not heard for want of faith.
Elihu spoke moreover, and said,
2 Thinkest thou this to be right, that thou saidst, My righteousness is more than God’s?
3 For thou saidst, What advantage will it be to thee? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin? [26]
4 I will answer thee, and thy companions with thee. [27]
5 Look to the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than thou.
6 If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions are multiplied, what doest thou to him?
7 If thou art righteous, what givest thou to him? or what receiveth he from thy hand?
8 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art ; and thy righteousness may profit the son of man.
9 By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.
10 But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;
11 Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?
12 There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.
