The Government rewarded his services by the grant of the title of C.I.E., in 1907; he was made a first class Sirdar in 1909, was created a Knight in 191 1, and the honor of baronetcy was conferred on him in January, 19 13. BiHARi Lal Gupta, C.S.i., i.c.S., Mr. — was educated at Colootola Branch School, Calcutta, and at Calcutta University and at University College, London. He was appointed to the LC.S. after the examination of 1869, and on coming to India was posted to Bengal. He was placed on famine relief duty in 1874, was Presidency Magistrate and Coroner in Calcutta in 187 1, District and Sessions Judge in 1888, Superintendent and Remembrancer of Legal Affairs in 1900, and officiated as Judge at the Calcutta High Court in 1901 and 1906. He became a member of the Legislative Council in March, 1902, retaining that position for five years, and was appointed Minister at Baroda in 19 12. Mr. Gupta has done excellent service in the Baroda State and Jn recognition of the same the title of C.S.L was confered on him in 1913. Address : Baroda. Ramabai Ranade, Mrs. — the widow of the late Mr. Justice M. G. Ranade, was born in the year 1863 in a village in Satara District. As was the practice in those days she had received no education till her marriage in 1874 when she was 11 years old. It was after the marriage that her husband seriously took upon himself the task of educating her. During the life-time of her husband she got ampleopportunitiesof broadening her mind and thus became a true companion of her great husband. Mr. Ranade before his death, in 1901, served for 7 years in Bombay as a Judge of the High Court and during this time Mrs. Ranade took a leading part in the social life of the city and it is a matter of great satisfaction that she has continued it to the present day.
