fqm and clean transcript

edit

@Xover: I seem to recall removing a style you added to a page, the formatting here is an example of what I think is a trend away from floating the quotation mark to the left. In one sense that style, fqm, placed the mark out in the left margin, but within the text block at it's corresponding close mark and not outside the right margin of the stanza. For this and other reasons, complexity in coding being another, I came to avoid using that style in my attempts at type transcripts. Cygnis insignis (talk) 00:36, 27 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Cygnis insignis: Indeed, judging from this page, this work does not employ floating quotation marks, and so we should not add them. A lot of other works do, however, and I am not aware of any general trend away from their use. They're mostly an artefact of the publisher's house style so reproducing them is generally optional when proofreading, but you shouldn't be surprised if other users then add them. And removing floating quotation marks (where they exist in the original, obviously) would generally not be seen as constructive. The usual caveats about consistency within a work and specific consensus overriding general rules apply, of course, but as a rule of thumb the community seems to favour reproducing floating quotation marks.
