"Ungebildete" means the uneducated or the uncultivated, but this was too telegraphic for this sentence to make sense in English so the single word was translated as the combination uncultivated person's choice which keeps it more parallel with the preceding clause. Cultivated was chosen over Educated so as to reduce the imply academic learning was the source.

Translates roughtly as relationship to him, but the him in this reference appears to point back to "Man" at the beginning of the sentence, which was translated as one. Thus, oneself seems more appropriate here.
