"Wissenschaft" is usually translated as science, but as in German it includes fields in the humanities like history, it seemed field of knowledge seemed more appropriate. (see also paragraph 62)
Unwissenheit edit
It's main meaning is ignorance but also an unaware ignorance or innocence is a possible meaning too. The sentence appears to play on both meanings of the word.
