"Guelph or Ghibelline" refers to rivalrous factions in Italy circa 1100-1500. For more see w:Guelphs and Ghibellines. Adams may mean that there was a choice between allying with the imperial power or a morality, like the Papacy, since that was a dividing line of the Guelphs and Ghibellines. -- econterms (talk) 05:22, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
