  • "Figure 1 is a perspective view" - view from ahead of or behind the aircraft
  • "Fig. 2 is a plan view" - view from above or below
  • "Fig. 3 is a side elevation" - view of the aircraft from the side
  • "Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views" - close-up views in the diagrams
  • "upright standards" - probably this refers to the vertical bars between the stacked wings, that is, the aeroplanes
  • "a small angle of incidence" - that is forward and rear edges of the wing (airfoil or aeroplane) are at about the same level relative to the oncoming airflow ; an orientation in which the air flow is only minimally interrupted by the wing ; see en:w:Angle of incidence (aerodynamics)
  • "equilibrium, or lateral balance of the apparatus" -- probably refers to the dangers of either sliding or rotating toward one side
  • "a frame composed of two parallel transverse spars 3, extending from side to side of the machine"
  • "their ends being connected by bows 4, extending from front to rear of the machine"
  • "connected by a series of parallel ribs 5"
  • bias, in the cloth around the wings - the 45-degree diagonal line along which a woven fabric is most stretchable - see en:w:Bias (textile)
  • 'soaring-machine - a glider; unpowered but generally not held captive to the earth by a string as a kite would be
