New Series

After vol. 34, the paper was suspended due to the Civil War. Publishing after the war had ended resumed, generally as the “New Series,” but it was very irregular, and few records remain; there were at least eight volumes. Some volumes were entered as the “After the War Series.” These records must be differentiated, however, as numerous times in the history of the antebellum paper, it started a “New Series,” despite the fact that the numbering of the whole, the “Old Series,” was still maintained. After vol. 6, for the second half of 1848, there was no paper for the first half of 1849. Vol. 7, for the second half of 1849, was published as vol. 1 of the first “New Series.” After vol. 8, the first eight volumes were sold as a collected edition, and vol. 9 was published as vol. 1 of the second “New Series.” However, vol. 10 was still published as vol. 4 of the first “New Series,” presuming vol. 9 (O. S.) as vol. 3 (N. S.); however it was listed fully as: “Vol. 10 (O. S.), Vol. 4 (2d S.), Vol. 2 (3d S.),” recognising all three of the published series. Vol. 11, however, was listed as vol. 1 of the “Enlarged Series,” as well as vol. 4 of the “New Series,” although no such series existed with such a numbering. Vol. 12 was listed as vol. 5 and vol. 2, continuing from vol. 11. Vol. 13 was listed as vol. 1 of the “New Series” and vol. 1 of the “Enlarged Series,” apparently combining the two denominations. Vol. 14, however, is listed as vol. 1 of the fifth apparent “New Series.” Vol. 15 is, again, listed as vol. 1 of the “New Series.” Vol. 16 follows the series of vol. 15, although vol. 17 follows the series of vol. 14. Vol. 18 is listed as vol. 1 of the seventh “New Series;” vol. 19 followed this numbering. Vol. 20 is listed as vol. 10 of the “Second Series,” claiming a division of the Review into series of 10 volumes each. Vol. 21, following this impetus, is listed as vol. 1 of the “Third Series.” This numbering continues to vol. 24. Vol. 25 is listed as vol. 1 of the “New Series.” Vol. 26 is listed as vol. 1 of the third “Enlarged Series,” and vol. 1 of the “New Series.” Vols. 27–33 continue these series as vols. 2–8 thereof. Vol. 34 is listed as vol. 1 of the “Enlarged Series,” and vol. 1 of the “New Series.”
