Wilkinson/ Chinese History: A New Manual: Giles "full of inaccuracies..."

edit

Wilkinson/ Chinese History: A New Manual: Giles "full of inaccuracies and the selection leaves much to be desired. Between one third and and a half of the dates are wrong because Giles supposed that if somebody is recorded as having died in 1200 aged 63 he or she must have been born in 1137 (in most cases 1138 would have been a better guess")." (p.157).

The Google Books version apparently does not mention Giles. However even if it does the purpose of wikisource is to "faithfully reproduce" the original work regardless of inaccuracies. Solomon7968 (talk) 07:26, 23 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for asking. The quote from Wilkinson is from the "New Manual" of 2013, which is not (yet?) on Google. I have the 2013 version before me as I write, and the quote is indeed on p. 157. However, I agree with you that the function of Wikisource is simply to make resources available. It's up to editors to make careful use of them. CWH (talk) 21:27, 3 February 2014 (UTC)Reply
That quote is also in the second edition, too, as I came across it. It's one reason I haven't worked on this lately--though it still would be nice if it would get finished someday. Rigadoun (talk) 02:48, 17 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
