Talk:Dictionary of National Biography, 1885-1900/Rymer, James

James Rymer senior, surgeon RN (of Reigate) is confused with his son James Rymer junior (of Ramsgate) also a surgeon.

James Rymer senior died in 1829 in Reigate - his will, dated 8 Jun 1823 proved 4 Aug 1829, left all his medicines to his wife Mary. She also died soon after and her will, dated 11 Feb 1829, left the medicines and the lease of the house to her 2 daughters.

James Rymer junior (b abt 1791 Reigate, d 1876) lived in Albion Hill Ramsgate with his wife Elizabeth (1841 & 1861 censuses) and is more likely to have been the author of "A Treatise on Diet & Regimen” rather than his father. Evidence to support this is that the preface of this book is dated "1 Jun 1828 Ramsgate" and amongst the subscribers is "James Rymer Sen Surgeon RN Reigate"

Rymer junior is also probably the author of "Observations on Hydrophobia" (Gentleman's Magazine June 1822) as he was living in Beaconsfield at this time where 3 of his children were baptised and also of "Cholera morbus: its first symptoms clearly pointed out..." which appears to have been published in 1831.

Interesting. This would mean that the current Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is also wrong; it attributes A Treatise on Diet and Regimen to the senior Rymer. The corrections can't be used here on Wikisource. Potentially they could on Wikipedia, but not as "original research". Charles Matthews (talk) 20:05, 14 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
