Talk:In Event of Moon Disaster

A sad and deeply moving statement. But I wonder if the reaction instead would have been to announce an effort to rescue Armstrong and Aldrin from their moon tragedy and hope that they could survive until that rescue took place. We don't like to announce failure in such a stark tone.

I don't know whether or not that would be feasible today, but back then it surely would not have been. Every space shot was done on a shoestring and always on the edge of disaster and bleeding edge of technology. I am sure they discussed that possibility, but I have to think it would have been impossible to mount a rescue mission - amounting to basically having a complete Saturn V + Apollo + Moon lander hot standby - in such short time.
