research notes edit

w:Samuel Hopkins (inventor) looks to be the best WP coverage of this patent. [1] has more information, but that article is likely copyright to w:Journal of the Patent & Trademark Office Society. John Vandenberg 12:41, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Press release by the USPTO.

this notes "Back in Chapter 29, E. T. Hall came to see Commissioner Leggett, offering to sell to the Patent Office the Hopkins patent, the first issued by the U. S. government. In 1879, Commissioner Paine wrote to the Interior Secretary, [footnote 5] recommending that Congress be asked to appropriate $500 to purchase the patent. The government did not purchase this document, and it eventually found its way into the collections of the Chicago Historical Society." unsigned comment by John Vandenberg (talk) 22:41, 3 November 2007.

minor issues edit

Any reason why Randolph's signiture is larger then Washington's, and one is in italics, while the other isn't? Also the coat of arms in the original should probably be added to the document.--T. Mazzei 02:49, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

The two signatures really should be cut out as images and placed in the text.
Do we have an image of that coat of arms? If not, a new image will need to be created. John Vandenberg (chat) 03:22, 17 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
The signatures and coat of arms have been extracted, uploaded to commons, and are ready to be added to the document by someone who can do so.--T. Mazzei 07:28, 19 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
