Purpose edit

This template provides a plain link to an entry in The National Gazetteer: A Topographical Dictionary of the British Isles, and is based on Template:authority/lkpl.

Links within The National Gazetteer usually use small-caps for presentation purposes, so the basis of the link is:

{{NatGaz lkpl|link=name of the entry|text=text, for presentation}}

link is mandatory, and text is optional

  • {{NatGaz lkpl| link = Manchester}}
produces Manchester that links to The National Gazetteer: A Topographical Dictionary of the British Isles/Manchester
  • {{NatGaz lkpl| link = Hampshire | text = Hants }}
produces Hants that links to The National Gazetteer: A Topographical Dictionary of the British Isles/Hampshire
  • {{NatGaz lkpl| link = Hampshire | text = {{sc|Hants}} }}
produces Hants that links to The National Gazetteer: A Topographical Dictionary of the British Isles/Hampshire

Note that small-caps is only included by default if text is not specified.

Note edit

1) This template does not automatically provide links from lower-case forms of entry names.

{{NatGaz lkpl|link=salop}} gives: salop,
which will not provide a link to an article titled “Salop”. Instead, one must provide the capitalized form manually, as
{{NatGaz lkpl|link=Salop|text=salop}}, which gives salop.

In practice this should not be a significant limitation, as place names are usually capitalized.

2) Most entries in the gazetteer do not have disambiguation pages, such that a template being used for "Abbey" will red-link even though there may exist several articles under dabbed titles, such as "Abbey (Devon)", "Abbey (Hampshire)", "Abbey Green", "Westminster Abbey", &c.

3) Similarly, some q.v and see notices in the gazetteer may direct to names which do not exist as separate titles, such as Hants, which is actually dealt with under the entry named Hampshire.
