ALLEN, Thomas, landscape painter, was born in St Louis, Mo., Oct. 19, 1849. He was educated in the public schools and at Washington university, St. Louis; was graduated in art at the Royal academy, Dusseldorf, Germany, in 1877, and continued his art studies in France three years. He exhibited first at the National academy of Design in New York in 1877, and at the Paris Salons of 1882, 1887, and 1889. He established a studio in Boston, became a member of the Society of American Artists in 1880, and an associate of the National Academy in 1884. He was also president of the Paint and Clay club, and of the Boston Society of Water Color Painters; vice-president of the Boston Art Students' association, and a member of the permanent committee of the School of Drawing and Painting of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He was a judge of awards at the World's Columbian exposition in 1898.
