THE LATE HAMILTON MACKINNON.

Mr. William John Clarke, Fremantle, writes:—The very touching and well-written article, 'In Memoriam,' of my late departed friend and benefactor, Hamilton Mackinnon, in Thursday evening's Daly News written by "W.E.M." has greatly moved one who has always held, the deceased journalist in the highest esteem and regard. The deceased gentleman was my father's dearest friend, and the literary executor of his works, and this important responsibility could not have been placed in better hands, for it is wholly to him that the Australian public owe the publication (in cheap form) of 'His Natural Life' some years ago, latterly of 'Heavy Odds' (my father's first novel, originally published under the title of 'Long Odds') of the 'Australian Tales' (for which he wrote my father's biography), "Australian Stories" (just published in London by Hutchinson), and numerous other articles and sketches. Hamilton Mackinnon contributed many articles of interest to the Australian Press, his devotion and kindly advice bestowed upon the eldest son of his friend, Marcus Clarke, who owes any success he may have obtained in the fields of literature to him, will long be remembered. I owe a deep and everlasting gratitude to my dear departed friend, and the loss of his wise counsel and assistance will always be felt and missed by his sorrowing friends.

'Although the gentle lips are dumb,
And closed in death the kindly eyes,
Fond memories will ever come
Around the grave where my friend lies.'
