ROUGET DE LISLE, roo-zhā dė lēl, Claude Joseph, French song-writer: b. Lons-le-Saulnier, France, 10 May 1760; d. Choisy-le-Roi, 27 June 1836. He published ‘Fifty French Songs, Words of Various Authors, Set to Music by Rouget de Lisle’ (1826), etc., but is chiefly remembered as the author of both the words and music of ‘the Marseillaise’ (q.v.).
