RUTTAN, Robert Fulford, Canadian chemist: b. Newburgh, Ontario, 1856. He was educated at the universities of Toronto, McGill and Berlin. From 1887 he was connected with the faculty of McGill University, occupying the chair of organic and biological chemistry there in 1902-12, since when he has been director of the department of chemistry. He has made many important contributions to the knowledge of medical chemistry. Author of ‘Artificial Alkaloids’; ‘Glycol Fats’; ‘Physical and Chemical Constants of Margaric Palmitic and Stearic Acids’, etc.
