WHITNEY, Sir James Pliny, Canadian statesman: b. Williamsburg, Ontario, 2 Oct. 1843; d. 24 Sept. 1914. He was called to the bar of Ontario in 1876, and engaged in practice at Morrisburg, Ontario. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1888, where he became the leader of the Conservative Opposition; and from 1905 until his death he was Premier of Ontario. He was knighted in 1908.
