The Green Jacket is a detective story but instead of a finger-print and footstep sleuth there is Millicent Newberry, a subdued lady in gray, knitting a green jacket. As her amber needles purl stitches she observes her clients, soon knits herself into their confidence and succeeds, of course, where old professionals fail. She distinguishes herself from these professionals by giving the discovered criminals a chance to reform before turning them over to an unpsychological prison system.—The New Republic, Nov 1917.
