Not every day can wear the charm
Of sunbeam's smile and cheery air,
Nor every life know naught of harm
Or sorrow's cross of care.

But every day that comes with rain
Means brighter sunny days to be;
And every life with hours of pain
Joy's happier hours will see,

This truth the years would have us learn;
By sorrow, joy is sweeter made;
Where fairest roses glow and burn,
The rain's soft lips were laid!
