BOM'BARDIER' (Fr. bombardier, It. bombardiero; for derivation, see Bombardment). A military title used in the British artillery. Acting bombardier is the first rank above gunner or driver, and bombardier the rank immediately higher. It is an appointment of the major commanding the battery, and, unlike the rank of sergeant, which can only be taken away by a regimental court-martial, may be canceled at any time by the commanding officer.
