CHICHIMECA, chē′chē̇mā′kȧ (Aztec, perhaps from chichiltie, red + mecayotl, race). ‘Dog people,’ a term of contempt anciently applied by the more cultured Aztecs to the wild tribes northward of the Valley of Mexico. The name has no ethnic significance whatever.
