ENGEL, Johann Christian von (1770-1814). An Hungarian historian. He was born at Leutschau, Hungary, and received his education at Göttingen, where he studied under Heyne, Schlözer, and other distinguished scholars. His works are full of varied and extensive information, and are characterized by great thoroughness. Engel was in some respects a pioneer as regards the history of Hungary. His principal work is entitled Geschichte des ungarischen Reiches und seiner Nebenländer (1797-1804).
