GILDEROY, gĭl'dẽr-oi. The romantic hero of a ballad preserved in Percy's Reliques, and a veritable character. Patrick of the Clan Gregor, in the annals of Perthshire, who was hanged as a highwayman, with five of his companions, in 1638. It was his boast that he had picked Cardinal Richelieu's pocket, robbed Cromwell, and hanged a judge.
