The New International Encyclopædia/Okinawa

OKINAWA, ō̇′kē̇-nä′wȧ. A Japanese ken or prefecture formed in 1879 to include those islands of the Loo-Choo (q.v.) Archipelago that were not incorporated into Kagoshima Ken. It takes its name from Okinawa, the largest of the group.
