WHIT'MAN. A town in Plymouth County, Mass., 21 miles south by east of Boston, on the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (Map: Massachusetts, F 3). It is primarily an industrial place, having manufactures of boots and shoes, tacks and nails, steel shanks, paper, wooden boxes, etc. There is a public library with 10,000 volumes. The government is administered by town meetings. The water-works are owned and operated by the town. Whitman, originally a part of Abington, was separately incorporated as South Abington in 1875. Its present name was adopted in 1886. Population, in 1890, 4441; in 1900, 6155.
