Czernowitz (chĕr′ nṓ-vits), a provincial capital of Austria, stands 720 feet above the sea, near the Pruth River.  Among its buildings are the palace of a Greek archbishop, his cathedral, the Armenian church, the synagogue and the Austria Monument.  The university, founded in 1875, has 41 professors and lecturers and about 400 students.  Population, 87,128, of whom 20,000 are Jews.
