The New Student's Reference Work/Johnson, Reverdy

Johnson, Reverdy, was born at Annapolis, Md., May 21, 1796. He studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1815. He gained high reputation as a profound lawyer, and frequently argued cases before the supreme court of the United States. He was elected to the senate in 1845, where he served four years. He was attorney-general in President Taylor's cabinet. He again became senator in 1862, and in 1868 was appointed minister to England. He died in Maryland in 1876.
