Worcester (wo͝os′tẽr), a city of England, is on Severn River, about 26 miles from Birmingham. It is an old town, smelting-works in the neighborhood being thought to date back to the time of the Romans. The cathedral, one of the noted ones of England, dates from 1084. It was much injured in the Civil War, but has been restored at great cost. Of the industries the most important are glove-making and the manufacture of porcelain, royal Worcester ware being celebrated for fine designs and beautiful execution. Other manufactures are those of leather, horse-hair weaving, vinegar, wine and engines. Population 46,624.
