Mr. Henry Riversdale Grenfell, who died yesterday of pneumonia, in his 79th year, was a well-known figure in the City, being a Director of the Bank of England, and having filled the office of Governor from 1881 to 1883. He was also a member of the Council of the Corporation of Foreign Bondholders, and was on the boards of several insurance companies. Mr. Grenfell was prominent on the bimetallist side during the controversy on the currency question, and was vice-president of the International Monetary Congress in Paris in 1899. He was elected as a Liberal for Stoke-on-Trent at a by-election in September 1862, on the death of Mr. J. L. Ricardo, defeating Mr. A. J. B. Beresford-Hope. He was returned again at the general election of 1865, but in 1868 he stood with Mr. Gladstone in the Liberal interest for South-West Lancashire, and they were both defeated. He came forward again at the general election of 1830, standing for Barnstaple, but was again defeated.
