The Times/1906/Obituary/Cecil Bendall

Layout 2 Intelligence reached Cambridge yesterday morning of the death of Mr. Cecil Bendall, Professor Sanscrit in the University of Cambridge, which took place in Liverpool. The late professor was born in 1856 and educated at the City of London School. In 1875 he entered at Trinity College, Cambridge, afterwards migrating to Gonville and Caius. He graduated in 1879 in the Classical Tripos, obtaining the fifth place in the first class. He also was placed in the first class of the Indian Languages Tripos in 1881, and was elected to a fellowship at Caius. From 1882 to 1893 he was senior assistant in the department of Oriental MSS, and printed books at the British Museum. In 1902 he was curator of Oriental literature at the Cambridge University library,. and in the following year was elected to succeed Professor Cowell as Professor of Sanscrit. He was Professor of Sanscrit at University College, London, from 1895 to 1902, and was also University lecturer at Cambridge in Sanscrit before his election to the chair. Professor Bendall publsihed a "Jurney of Literary and Archæological Research in Nepal and Norther India," 1886, and several Oriental works of importance. He also catalogued Sanscrit and Pali books and Sanscrit MSS. in the British Museum and the Buddhist Sanscrit MSS. in the Cambridge University library. He married, in 1898, Georgette, widos of Mr. G. Mosse, of Cowley-hall, Middlesex.
