The Viper of Milan
A Romance of Lombardy
 (1906)
by Marjorie Bowen

The Literary digest, 1907: The epoch with which the novel deals is probably the most dramatic in modern history. The exploits of the petty Italian despots shown against the lurid background of the Renaissance furnish a plethora of dramatic incident for the writer of romance. It is evident that the young author has saturated her mind with the history of this period, and if her narrative is at times marked with an overabundance of naïveté it is none the less interesting for that. The novel is more notable, however, for its promise of future achievement than for its intrinsic merit.

The Viper of Milan

"Lovely in the midst of crime,
And yet unlovely through excess of guilt,
He dazzled through that dim-lit time,
And noble blood for a vain shadow spilt."
