A NEW AND COPYRIGHT EDITION OF THE WORKS OF

THOMAS CARLYLE

TO BE CALLED

THE "CENTENARY" EDITION

and completed in 30 large Square Crown 8vo Volumes.

Price $1.25 per Volume.

In announcing the publication of a new and complete edition of the works of THOMAS CARLYLE, to be issued by Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons, of New York, in conjunction with Messrs. Chapman and Hall, of London, the exclusive holders of the original copyrights, the Publishers are fulfilling a promise, made some time ago, to offer to the public a cheap Library Edition.

The edition, to be called The Centenary Edition, is being brought out under the supervision of Mr. H. D. Traill, D.C.L., who will contribute a general introduction to the first volume, and a short preface to each succeeding work.

With a view to making the Centenary Edition as complete as possible, the Publishers intend to add another volume to the already well-known works, comprising some essays, and minor writings never before published in a collected form.

The Centenary Edition will be printed from the text of the last edition collated and arranged by Carlyle himself.

The composition and printing has been entrusted to the well-known firm of printers, Messrs. T. and A. Constable of Edinburgh, who have had a fount of type specially cast for this edition.

The paper on which the edition will be printed will be good, light, and strong, and of the make known as Antique Wove.

The volumes will be grouped in an appropriate manner, and every effort will be made to keep the volumes of a uniform size.

The Illustrations will consist mainly of portraits, several of which, including some of Thomas Carlyle, have never appeared in any existing edition.

Maps and Plans will also be given.

A specimen of the type and size of page appears on page three of this Prospectus, which is printed on the paper to be used for the Centenary Edition.

It is proposed to publish the first volume on the 1st October, and succeeding volumes in the order given on page four.

such extraordinary Night-thoughts, no feeling might be traced there; but with the light we had, which indeed was only a single tallow-light, and far enough from the window, nothing save that old calmness and fixedness was visible.

These were the Professor's talking seasons: most commonly he spoke in mere monosyllables, or sat altogether silent and smoked; while the visitor had liberty either to say what he listed, receiving for answer an occasional grunt; or to look round for a space, and then take himself away. It was a strange apartment; full of books and tattered papers, and miscellaneous shreds of all conceivable substances, 'united in a common element of dust.' Books lay on tables, and below tables; here fluttered a sheet of manuscript, there a torn handkerchief, or nightcap hastily thrown aside; ink-bottles alternated with bread-crusts, coffee-pots, tobacco-boxes. Periodical Literature, and Blücher Boots. Old Lieschen (Lisekin, 'Liza), who was his bed-maker and stove-lighter, his washer and wringer, cook, errand-maid, and general lion's-provider, and for the rest a very orderly creature, had no sovereign authority in this last citadel of Teufelsdröckh; only some once in the month she half-forcibly made her way thither, with broom and duster, and (Teufelsdröckh hastily saving his manuscripts) effected a partial clearance, a jail-delivery of such lumber as was not Literary. These were her Erdbeben (earthquakes), which Teufelsdröckh dreaded worse than the pestilence; nevertheless, to such length he had been forced to comply. Glad would he have been to sit here philosophising forever, or till the litter, by accumulation, drove him out of doors: but Lieschen was his right-arm, and spoon, and necessary of life, and would not be flatly gainsayed. We can still remember the ancient woman; so silent that some thought her dumb; deaf also you would often have supposed her; for Teufelsdröckh, and Teufelsdröckh only, would she serve or give heed to; and with him she seemed to communicate chiefly by signs; if it were not rather by some secret divination that she guessed all his wants, and supplied them.
