COOPER, Major-General Edward Joshua, C.B. (1904), D.S.O. (1900), M.V.O. (1906). Retired Pay, late Royal Fusiliers; b. 21st April, 1858: eldest son of the late Colonel J. H. Cooper, of Dunboden, Co. Westmeath; m. 1894. Effie, only dau. of J. F. Balmain. of Dalrock, Perthshire. Educ.: Marlborough and Sandhurst. Entered the Army in 1876; Captain, 1885; Major, 1897; Lieut.-Col., 1901; Col.. 1904. Served in Egypt, 188687 as A.D.C. to the G.O.C. Frontier Field Force. South Africa, 1899-02: present at the Battles of Colenso, Hussar Hill, Relief of Ladysmith, Relief of Mafeking, and operations in the Western Transvaal. Commandant, Riversdale and Beaufort, West Cape Colony. Tibet Expedition, 1904; present at the storming of Gyantse Jong and advance to Lhassa. Commanded the troops in North China, 1910-14, including the Chinese Revolution of 1911. European War, 1914-18: in command of 46th and 13th Brigades, and 58th London Division. Retired, 1918, with the rank of Major-General. Is a D.L. for Westmeath. Res.: Dunboden Park, Mullingar. Clubs: Naval and Military; Royal Irish Automobile.
