Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 627

Laws for sleeping in the sukkah	דין הישן בסוכה
627:1 One must sit within the air of the sukkah [i.e. directly under the space of the s’chach]. One who sleeps under a bed in the sukkah that is ten handbreaths high has not fulfilled the obligation.	סעיף א (צריך לישב באויר הסוכה) הישן תחת המטה בסוכה אם היא גבוה עשרה טפחים לא יצא:
627:2 One who sleeps under a slanting canopy in a sukkah that is not ten handbreaths tall or that has no handbreath-wide roof has fulfilled the obligation.	סעיף ב הישן תחת הכילה בסוכה אם אינה גבוה עשרה טפחי' או שאין לה גג רחב טפח יצא:
627:3 It is forbidden to hang a sheet over the four bedposts to sleep under it, even if they are not ten [handbreaths] tall. However, if one ascends from the head and two from the foot [of the bed] and beams (meaning long pieces of wood like handle of a pike) are placed between them, it is permitted to spread sheets over it and sleep under because it has no handbreath-wide roof above. This applies when they are not higher than ten handbreaths. There are those who declare this valid even if it is greater than ten tefachim.	סעיף ג העצים היוצאים מארבע ראשי המטה אסור לפרוס עליהן סדין ולישן תחתיו אפילו אם אינם גבוהים עשרה אבל אם אחד יוצא באמצע המטה בראשה והשני במרגלותיה כנגדו ונותנים כלונסות (פי' עצים ארוכים כעין קנה של רומח) מזה לזה מותר לפרוס סדין עליו לישן תחתיו משום דאין לה גג רחב טפח למעלה והוא שלא יהיו גבוהים עשרה טפחים ויש מכשירין אפילו בגבוהים עשרה טפחים:
627:4 If one hangs fabric under the schach for ornamentation and is within four tefachim of the roof, it is valid. If it is farther than four tefachim from the roof, it is invalid. And if it is not for ornamentation, even if it is within four tefachim, it is invalid. (One should be careful to only hang decorations in the sukkah within four handbreaths of the [roof of the] sukkah (Mahari"l).)	סעיף ד פירס סדין תחת הסכך לנוי אם הוא בתוך ארבעה טפחים לגג כשרה ואם הוא רחוק ארבעה טפחים מן הגג פסולה ואם אינו לנוי אע"פ שהוא בתוך ארבעה טפחים פסולה (ויש ליזהר שלא לתלות שום נוי סוכה רק בפחות מארבעה לסוכה) (מהרי"ל):
