Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Yoreh Deah/48
Contains 12 Seif 1editA Keivah (Keivah/abomasum is the pocket [the wider first part] of the beast's intestines. Because the food enters the Keres/rumen and at the end of the Keres there's whats called the Pantsh shaped like a hat (or bonnet) and also known as Beit haKosot/honeycomb-tripe/bonnet and the food goes from Beit haKosot to the Hemses/omasum/tripe and from the Hemses to the Keivah/abomasum and from the Keivah to the Dakin/small[er] intestines) that is punctured - it's treif. And if the chelev that's on the inside of the curve seals the puncture it's kosher, but if it's on the arched side it doesn't seal it. {Kaf haChaim: The Keivah is bow shaped and the chelev that's on the outside curve is called d'akashta and the chelev inside the curve is called d'iyyaytra ...} 2editA Keres that's punctured - it's treif, and there's nothing that can seal it for behold the chelev that's on it is assur.
3editThe hide that covers most of the Keres, which is the part of the belly where if it's ripped then the Keres will come out - if this flesh is torn it's treif, even though the tear doesn't reach the Keres until it's visible; rather, since the majority of the thickness of this flesh is torn or it's missing - it's treif. What's the size how long this tear has to be? A Tefach. And if it's a young beast and a majority of the flesh covering the Keres is torn, even though the torn length isn't a Tefach it's treif since most of it is torn.
4editIf a portion of this flesh was cut out in a circular or oblong piece, if it was larger than a sela coin, which is large enough to fit three date pits alongside each other - snugly if there's food remnants around it when [it's eating] or as an empty space when there's no food in [it] at all, behold it's treif, for if it gets stretched this hole will stretch to a tefach. 5editIf this flesh is decayed to the point that a vet would remove it then it's considered like it's missing.
6editA needle found in the cavity of the Keivah or Keres, its rule is the same as for a needle found in the Beit haKosot. 7editIf the Hemses and Beit haKosot are stuck together, if they're punctured where they're connected even if the hole goes from one to the other - it's kosher. But if the hole is on other sides where they're not stuck together, then if the puncture goes from one side to the other it's treif, otherwise it's kosher, whether it's on the Hemses or Beit haKosot.
8editIf there's found in one of them, submerged a needle or thorn but it's not pierced from one side to the other, we turn it inside out and check it from outside. If there's found on it a blood clot it's definitely pierced through and it's treif, otherwise it's kosher (Tos., H"M p. 6 in the name of Samak, and all the poskim) (even if there's only a little bit of the external peel that's not pierce) (see the previous siman, #21). Provided they they haven't salted or rinsed it, even then thick end toward the outside.
And if the needle passed from one side to the other and is still submerged in it we check it. If there's found a blood clot around the needle (all the more so if on it) (Mord' and poskim, which is Sh"S Arukh PA"T daf 51, and Ketuvot 76), it's known that before Shechita it was totally pierced and it's treif, otherwise after shechita he pressed it and it went through therefore it's kosher, if they haven't salted and rinsed it, for since the needle is still there, if it has gone through then he's refreshing the blood around it, but when the needle isn't in present it's forbidden when it's totally pierced even if there's no blood clot.
9editIf rust is found on it it's the same rule as when a blood clot is found on it.
10editThat which we said, if from one side then it's kosher, it means from the inside facing the intestines, for it it's the surface facing the cavity even if it's not pierced at all but just there's found a needle in the abdominal cavity it's treif. 11editA needle that's found in the Korkeban (gizzard) and it's entirely submerged in the thickness of the flesh and there remains approximately a half thumbreadth from the side of the chamber and also from the outside so the needle was not eaten and there is no sign of puncture neither inside nor out, we ascribe it [to some other reason] and we are lenient.
12editIf a minor found a needle found lodged in its Keres it's preferable to be stringent and forbid it based on him if he's sharp enough to understand the matters involved in this. |
