Chap. 1996.—An Act For the relief of Harry C. Mix.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That Harry C. Mix, of Bibb County, Georgia, be, and he is hereby, relieved from any and all liability to pay a certain recognizance given by A. F. Holt and the said Harry C. Mix as security for the said A. F. Holt on the twenty-third day of January, eighteen hundred and ninety-five, in the penal sum of one thousand five hundred dollars, by which recognizance they acknowledged themselves to be held and firmly bound to the United States of America that the said A. F. Holt should personally appear at the then next term of the district court of the United States for the southern district of Georgia, to be held at Savannah, Georgia, in said district, on the first Monday in January, eighteen hundred and ninety-five, and at the succeeding term or terms, should the case be continued, the said A. F. Holt being charged with the embezzlement of postal funds: Proviso.
Payment of costs
Provided, however, That the said Harry C. Mix shall first pay to the Government of the United States all costs that may have accrued upon any proceeding instituted for the purpose of forfeiting such recognizance.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to adjust and settle the claim of the Columbia Brewing Company, of Shenandoah Pennsylvania, for the sum of four hundred and sixteen dollars and twenty-five cents, being the amount paid by that company and covered into the Treasury of the United States for beer stamps ordered by the said company but never received by it, by payment of said sum of four hundred and sixteen dollars and twenty-five cents, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to pay to Eugene Patenaude, Colchester, Chittenden County, Vermont, the sum of five hundred dollars, in full for injuries sustained by him by reason of his being shot and severely wounded on the twenty-third day of September, nineteen hundred and one, at said Colchester, by a stray bullet fired by an unknown member of Eleventh Regiment United States Cavalry while at target practice. That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, five hundred dollars for the payment of this claim.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized, empowered, and directed to issue a duplicate of a registered bond of the United States, four per centum, issued under the Acts of July fourteenth, eighteen hundred and seventy, and January twentieth, eighteen hundred and seventy-one, numbered fifty-two thousand three hundred and fifty-seven, for one thousand dollars, and inscribed in the name of Mary P. Gilmore, now deceased, to Walter S. Glidden and William T. Hall, junior, administrators de bonis non of the estate of said Mary P. Gilmore, upon the said administrators filing a bond in the Treasury, with sufficient sureties, Indemnity bondin such sum as may be determined necessary by the Secretary of the Treasury, and to be approved by him, conditioned to save harmless and indemnify the United States against all legal claims and demands which may be made under said original bond or reissue.

Sec. 2. That this Act shall take effect when approved.

Gibson, deceased, duplicates in lieu of United States four per centum registered bonds of the funded loan of nineteen hundred and seven, numbered one hundred and ten thousand four hundred and seventy-nine and one hundred and ten thousand four hundred and eighty for one hundred dollars each, and ninety thousand three hundred and ninety-eight for one thousand dollars, inscribed in name of said Artemus E. Gibson and alleged to have been lost or destroyed: Proviso.Indemnity bondProvided, That the legal representative of the estate of said Artemus E. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That Russel A. McKinley, who enlisted on the twenty-third of April, nineteen hundred, under the name of Waldo Delacy, and was assigned to Troop C, Second Regiment United States Cavalry, shall be held and considered to have remained continuously in the military service of the United States and in the line of duty as a soldier until the twentieth day of January, nineteen hundred and one, when he was released from military control, and his discharge from said service shall be held and considered to have taken effect on said twentieth day of January, nineteen hundred and one: Provided, That no pay or other emoluments shall become due or payable to any person by reason of the passage of this Act.

Rosenthal, late consul of the United States at Leghorn, Italy, the sum of eight hundred and nineteen dollars and eleven cents, to reimburse him for moneys expended by him in procuring the disinfection of articles of merchandise shipped from the port of Leghorn, Italy, to the United States during the prevalence of cholera, in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-three.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That on account of the burning of one of the buildings of Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania, on Friday, December eighteenth, eighteen hundred and eighty two, known as Culver Hall, whereby a shortage of three hundred and fifty-eight dollars and twenty-three cents was incurred to ordnance and ordnance stores issued to said college under its bond, dated March second, eighteen hundred and seventy seven, the Secretary of War is hereby authorized and directed to relieve said Allegheny College, at Meadville, Pennsylvania, from any further money responsibility under said bond not exceeding the above-named amount.

medal voted by Congress to him in the year eighteen hundred and seventy-four, for saving many lives from drowning, in place of the said medal, which was stolen from him in October, nineteen hundred and one.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, TThat the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and instructed to issue to the administrator of the estate of Mary Keating, born Mary Cottroll, duplicates in lieu of United States four per centum registered bonds, issued under the Acts of July fourteenth, eighteen hundred and seventy, and January twentieth, eighteen hundred and seventy-one, numbered ninety-nine thousand and forty-four, ninety-nine thousand and forty-five, ninety-nine thousand and forty-six, and ninety-nine thousand and forty-seven, for one hundred dollars each, inscribed in the name of Mary Cottroll, said bonds having been lost or destroyed and not having been assigned by the said payee: Proviso.
Indemnifying bond
Provided, That the said administrator shall first file in the Treasury a bond in a penal sum in double the amount of said missing bonds and interest that would accrue thereon until the same shall become due or payable, with two good and sufficient sureties, residents of the United States, to be approved by the Secretary of the Treasury with condition to indemnify and save harmless the United States from any claim because of the lost bonds.

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of War be, and he is hereby, authorized to grant Major Thomas W. Symons, Corps of Engineers, leave of absence without pay; and that he be permitted to assist the State of New York by acting as member of an advisory board of consulting engineers in connection with the improvement and enlargement of the navigable canals of the State of New York. The permission hereby given shall be held to terminate at such date or dates as the Secretary of War may determine.
