Tipitaka

edit

Tripitaka (Sanskrit) aka Tipitaka (Pali) (cf Bible) means a canon of Buddhist scripture. It contains canonical scripture and also (possibly?) non-canonical scripture.

In particular, the Pali Canon (cf Protestant vs Catholic vs Orthodox canon ?) is the Tripitaka version that is used by Theravada Buddhism

The Pali Canon contains three parts (cf Old Testament and New Testament?):

  1. Vinaya Pitaka
  2. Sutta Pitaka - contains writings by Buddha (including the Dhammapada) and also writings by others
  3. Abhidhamma Pitaka
