| Puis il rentra et dit à Margot : "Sois rassurée ma chère sœur et endors-toi en paix, Dieu ne nous laissera pas tomber." Puis il s’allongea dans son lit. | Then he went back and said to Grethel, "Be comforted, dear little sister, and sleep in peace, God will not forsake us," and he lay down again in his bed. |

| Lorsqu’ils eurent fait un bout de chemin, Jeannot s’arrêta et regarda vers la maison puis il après quelques pas il recommençait à nouveau. | When they had walked a short time, Hänsel stood still and peeped back at the house, and did so again and again. |
| Le père dit alors : "Jeannot, que regardes-tu là bas et pourquoi restes-tu en arrière, fais attention et n’oublie pas tes jambes !" | His father said, "Hänsel, what art thou looking at there and staying behind for? Mind what thou art about, and do not forget how to use thy legs." |
| "Ah mon père, dit Jeannot, je regarde mon chat blanc qui est assis en haut sur le toit et qui veut me dire adieu." | "Ah, father," said Hänsel, "I am looking at my little white cat, which is sitting up on the roof, and wants to say good-bye to me." |

| Jeannot ne regardait pas le chat mais jetait à chaque fois un caillou blanc de sa poche... | Hänsel, however, had not been looking back at the cat, but had been constantly throwing one of the white pebble-stones out of his pocket on the road. |

| Jeannot et Margot ramenèrent quelques fagots de quoi en faire un joli tas. | Hänsel and Grethel gathered brushwood together, as high as a little hill. |

| Ils frappèrent à la porte, la femme ouvrit et lorsqu’elle s’aperçut que c’était Jeannot et Margot, elle leur dit : "Méchants enfants, pourquoi avez dormi aussi longtemps dans la forêt ? | They knocked at the door, and when the woman opened it and saw that it was Hänsel and Grethel, she said, "You naughty children, why have you slept so long in the forest? — we thought you were never coming back at all!" |
| Nous avons cru que vous ne vouliez plus revenir à la maison." | The father, however, rejoiced, for it had cut him to the heart to leave them behind alone. |

| "Jeannot ! pourquoi t’arrêtes-tu et regardes-tu autour de toi ? l’interpellait le père, avance !" | "Hänsel, why dost thou stop and look round?" said the father, "go on." |
| "Je regarde ma colombe qui se tient sur le toit et me fait au revoir" répondit Jeannot. | "I am looking back at my little pigeon which is sitting on the roof, and wants to say good-bye to me," answered Hänsel. |
| "Idiot dit la femme, ce n’est pas ta colombe, c’est le soleil qui se lève et qui brille sur la cheminée." | "Simpleton!" said the woman, "that is not thy little pigeon, that is the morning sun that is shining on the chimney." |

| Vers midi, Margot partagea son pain avec Jeannot qui avait éparpillé le sien sur le chemin. | When it was noon, Grethel shared her piece of bread with Hänsel, who had scattered his by the way. |
| Puis ils s’endormirent. Le soir vint mais personne ne vint reprendre les pauvres enfants. | Then they fell asleep and evening came and went, but no one came to the poor children. |
| Ils se réveillèrent au beau milieu de la nuit, Jeannot rassura sa sœur et lui dit : "Attends Margot, jusqu’à ce que la lune se lève, nous verrons les miettes de pain que j’ai semées ils nous montreront le chemin de la maison." | They did not awake until it was dark night, and Hänsel comforted his little sister and said, "Just wait, Grethel, until the moon rises, and then we shall see the crumbs of bread which I have strewn about, they will show us our way home again." |
| Lorsque la lune fut haute, ils se levèrent, mais ils ne trouvèrent aucune miette de pain, car les milliers d’oiseaux qui voletaient dans les bois et les prés les avaient picorées. | When the moon came they set out, but they found no crumbs, for the many thousands of birds which fly about in the woods and fields, had picked them all up. |

| Ils marchèrent toute la nuit et le jour entier encore du matin au soir mais ils ne trouvèrent jamais la sortie de la forêt et étaient si affamés car ils n’avaient rien de mieux que les quelques baies qu’ils trouvaient de-ci delà. | They walked the whole night and all the next day too from morning till evening, but they did not get out of the forest, and were very hungry, for they had nothing to eat but two or three berries, which grew on the ground. |

| La vieille s’était faite amicale, en fait, c’était une méchante sorcière qui avait tendu un piège aux enfants en construisant une maisonnette en pain, uniquement pour attirer les enfants. | The old woman had only pretended to be so kind; she was in reality a wicked witch, who lay in wait for children, and had only built the little bread house in order to entice them there. |

| Lorsque Jeannot et Margot se sont approchés d’elle, elle avait souri méchamment et avait dit mielleusement : "Je les tiens, ils ne doivent pas m’échapper !" | When Hänsel and Grethel came into her neighbourhood, she laughed maliciously, and said mockingly, "I have them, they shall not escape me again!" |
| Le lendemain matin, à peine les enfants réveillés, elle se leva aussitôt, et tout en les regardant tranquillement avec leurs joues bien rouges, elle se murmura à elle même : "Cela fera un bon déjeuner." | Early in the morning before the children were awake, she was already up, and when she saw both of them sleeping and looking so pretty, with their plump red cheeks, she muttered to herself, "That will be a dainty mouthful!" |

| Margot se mit à pleurer amèrement ; mais tout cela était inutile, elle devait faire ce que la méchante sorcière lui avait ordonné. | Grethel began to weep bitterly, but it was all in vain, she was forced to do what the wicked witch ordered her. |
| La meilleure cuisine fut alors cuite pour Jeannot, tandis que pour Margot on ne servait que les carapaces d’écrevisses. | And now the best food was cooked for poor Hänsel, but Grethel got nothing but crab-shells. |

| Jeannot lui glissait alors un vieil os et la vieille qui n’y voyait presque plus, pensait que c’était la main de Jeannot et s’étonnait de ce qu’il ne voulait pas engraisser. | Hänsel, however, stretched out a little bone to her, and the old woman, who had dim eyes, could not see it, and thought it was Hänsel's finger, and was astonished that there was no way of fattening him. |
| Quatre semaines passèrent, Jeannot était toujours aussi maigre, la vieille à bout de patience et ne voulut plus attendre. "Margot ! allez ouste" appela-t-elle, "vas chercher de l’eau ! | When four weeks had gone by, and Hänsel still continued thin, she was seized with impatience and would not wait any longer, "Hola, Grethel," she cried to the girl, "be active, and bring some water. |

| Elle poussa la pauvre Margot vers le four duquel les flammes déjà sortaient. | She pushed poor Grethel out to the oven, from which flames of fire were already darting. |
| "Penche-toi et vois si c’est suffisamment chaud afin que nous puissions y enfourner le pain." | "Creep in," said the witch, "and see if it is properly heated, so that we can shut the bread in." |
| Puis lorsque Margot fut assez proche, elle voulut ouvrir le four pour la faire rôtir dedans et ensuite la dévorer. | And when once Grethel was inside, she intended to shut the oven and let her bake in it, and then she would eat her, too. |
| Mais Margot devinant ses intentions dit : "Je ne sais pas comment faire pour entrer dedans !" | But Grethel saw what she had in her mind, and said, "I do not know how I am to do it; how do you get in?" |

| "Canard, canard attentionné Margot et Jeannot n’ont Ni passerelle, ni pont Sur ton dos fais-nous passer" | There's never a plank, or bridge in sight, Take us across on thy back so white." |
| Le canard approcha et Jeannot s’installa sur son dos et pria sa sœur de le rejoindre s’assoir près de lui. | The duck came to them, and Hänsel seated himself on its back, and told his sister to sit by him. |
