Author:Swami Vivekananda edit

If you are using the default skin, there is a move tab and the top of the page. I would move the table of contents (probably manually, you do not want the other author information) on the author page to The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda and make the other works a sub-page of that. Are you compiling the volume yourself? I am not sure what the "To be merged with Complete Works" section means — if you don't get what I mean by that, it may be easiest to tell me where your source for the writings, which you should anyway. 8) --Benn Newman 16:20, 4 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Uploads edit

I don't think the tool I use would do what you want. I post-processed this slice of EB1911 for Gutenberg, and I have modified the program I used to make HTML (from the Gutenberg proofs with my own unique mark-up) to produce something close to wiki copy from the same proofs (it still needs some tweaking in detail). So I don't have anything to convert existing HTML to wiki, I'm afraid.--Laverock ( Talk ) 17:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for adding those footers to the Abraham Lincoln pages. Danny 11:55, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda edit

I am a little confused by this work. At the bottom you a heading called "Unpublished" If they were not published how are they part of this work? Also who is the translator of this work?--BirgitteSB 05:56, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree it is confusing, by unpublished, I mean that it has not been published in either of the volumes. I will rename it or put it under right place. Thanks for pointing out this. Most of the work (speeches, epistles) is in english, and the remaining which exists in bengali has been translated by bengali and sanskrit scholars of ramakrishna ashrama --Nvineeth 06:20, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
If it not published in these volumes it should be listed on the Author page as a seperate work. Could you list the translator or if it is a work originally in English on each text's individual page? India has a really long term of copyright and we may be getting into trouble with some of the translations. After I left this note I did find a list of his travels in the West which could help indentify some of the origainlly English works if you do not have the information at hand.
The moving page work is pretty much done. I need to go through that list and clean it up. But thanks for the offer! --BirgitteSB 06:34, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sure, will do, but need some time to add the info on individual page, I don't think there will be any copyright violations, because this work already exists in public domain here and Swami Vivekananda died in 1901, more than 100 years back! --Nvineeth 07:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
The only concern I have with copyright is in translation. All the original works of Swami Vivekananda are in the Public Domain, but some English versions may still be copyrighted. Translations get new copyrights and we have to know when the translator died to know if the English text is public domain or not. --BirgitteSB 17:19, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I am looking at The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda/Volume 3/Buddhistic India. This is what I think about copyright. The original lecture in English is Public Domain. In 1967 this particular publisher took that PD text and add clarifications (words in square brackets and periods), the 1967 version contains copyright elements (these additions made by the publisher). I think we need to be sure we only host the text that is PD by removing these elements. This is the difficult thing in working with a recent edition of a text. You have to try and only pull out the public domain parts. Please ask others for second opinion if you are certain in what I say above. Copyright is very painful and complex. --BirgitteSB 17:33, 3 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Sure, BirgitteSB, I will definitely look into these issues, thanks for pointing them out, but as far as I know, the ramakrishna ashram wants to propogate the works of swami vivekananda, and so I think they have dropped the concerns about copyright, the books are available at a very subsidized price, and the contents are available online here, If you want I don't mind contacting the president of the institute and getting a letter of approval, I am sure they will be glad to approve and have it at wikisource. I understand that copyright issues are complex, if we find it tough to resolve it, I am ready to remove the contents with copyright problem, thanks a lot. --Nvineeth 17:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

No worries. Was The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda/Unpublished/III New York Times May 2, 1894 published as part of that work? If it was only ever published in the NYT, I think it should be moved to The New York Times/Had no meats at the dinner, and added to our collection at The New York Times. It can then be listed separately on the author page. John Vandenberg 12:44, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am not sure about this, pls give me sometime, I will check in the 9 volumes (i have the physical books:)) and check if this article is there. I am not sure since I did not add it. Thanks. --Nvineeth 03:25, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure, take your time.

As you have the physical book, I have added your name as a proofreader at Talk:The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda, so we know who to contact if there are changes that we are not certain about. John Vandenberg 08:07, 29 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
