ELLIS, Henry Disney (KUCHING), M.I.C.E., M.C.S.C.E., D.L.S., O.L.S.; Commissioner of Public Worlds and Surveys, Sarawak; b. 1854, s. of Colonel H. D. Ellis, 9th Regiment; m. d. of William Armstrong, C.E., The Priory, Toronto, Canada. Educ: Private School. Went to Canada, 1873, and was employed on railway.and private engineering work until 1880; given position as assistant Engineer on location of the Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie Railway, 1880; in 1882 was appointed Dominion Land Surveyor and placed in charge of a portion of the 13th Base Line Survey for Canadian Government; this work being finished acted as assistant Engineer on the Northern Pacific Junction Railway, and as such located the line from Gravenhurst to South River; transferred to Chief Engineer's Office during the construction of this line, uitil 1885; and then joined General Middleton's forces during the N. W. Rebellion as Lieutenant in the Dominion 1 and Surveyors' Corps; was present at the 3 days' fighting and capture of Batoche for which received Medal and clasp; returning to Toronto, appointed as Engineer in Charge of adjustment and relaying of 222 miles of track on the N. P. J. Railway and the N. and N. W. Railway; left the N. and N. W. Railway (Canada) in 1888; then took position on the Detroit Extension of the Ontario and Quebec Bramch of the Canadian Pacific Railway; was placed in charge under W. T Jennings, Chief Engineer, of the Harbour Work at Toronto, 1889: appointed as Engineer in charge of roadways and pavements for the City of Toronto with Special. Charge of the Construction of 80 miles of Electric Tramway lines and conversion of horse car service to au electric service, 1890; left the post, on completion of this work, Feb.. 1893; after that, acted as Engineer to the contractors for the construction of the Manitoba and Lake Dauphin Railway (105 miles); this work being completed, left Canada for England, and was appointed Commissioner of Public Works and Surveys by His Highness the Rajah of Sarawak, 1899.
