CLARE, John D. (SHANGHAI), M.J.I.; Editor "Shanghai Mercury" and "Celestial Empire"; b. Aug. 12, 1842; widower. Educ.: Privately, and at Norwich Grammar School; came to the Far East in 1831 when serving in Royal Navy; left Navy in 18C5; was present at the actions of Shimonoseki and Kagoshima; helped to establish the "Rising Sun and Nagasaki Express" in 1873 and 1874; was merchant and broker in Shanghai, 1875-79; established "Shanghai Mercury"in 1879.
