Educ.: Dartmouth College; Andover Theological Seminary. Arrived in Japan, Nov. 30, 1869, and, with exception of furloughs, has resided there continuously since; has been Councillor, Vice President and President of Asiatic Society of Japan. Publications:" Chinese Testament for Japanese Readers," 1879;" The Christian Movement in its relation to the New Life in Japan," numerous papers in the Journal of the Asiatic Society.
