HARRIS, Right Rev. Dr. Merriman Cuthbart (TOKYO), D.D. LL.D.; Bishop of Methodist Episcopal Church for Japan and Corea; b. July 9, 1816. Educ.: Allegheny College, Pa. Was a soldier in American Civil War, 1863-65; afterwards held commission; ordained, 1873; arrived in Japan as Missionary, 1873; founded missions to Japan in Hawaii and Pacific Coast districts; elected Bishop for Japan and Corea, 1904.
