Appointed Army Surgeon soon after return from Germany; promoted to Surgeon-General of Medical Department about 1885; resigned two years later to devote himself to Red Cross work; Chief Medical Officer of the Red Cross Hospital; nominated member of House of Peers in 1890, but resigned next year: now Physician in Waiting to Court.
