Entered Service Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, 1883; Manager of Peking branch since 1891; was in Peking during Boxer outbreak 1930-01; negotiator of Chinese Imperial Government loans, issued in London and Berlin, 1895-99; British delegate on Commission of Bankers for the Chinese indemnity, 1902; failure of sight in 1896, resulted eventually in total blindness; made C.M.G.
