Began training as teacher under his father, also a teacher: was head of the All England Scholarship Exam, list, 1870; graduated in 1872 with 1st class Certificate; Head Master, Middlewich Schools, 1872-75; of the Anglo-Chinese School, Shanghai, 1875-89; and the Shanghai Public School, 1889 to present time.
