Leader of the "Black Flags"; Brigade-General, Nan-Ao Division, Kwangtung, April, 1886; do., Nan-Yang Division, Honan, Nov., 1899; do., Chieh-Shih Division, Kwangtung, March, 1900; distinguished himself in fighting against the French at Foochow, and in Formosa, against Japanese; retired owing to ill-health, May, 1906.
