Vol., Aug., 1862; participated in about 20 battles, wounded twice and was brevetted for bravery and promoted from 3rd Sergeant to Captain; obtained discharge, July, 1865; Missionary of Presbyterian Board at Yokohama, 1872-98; since 1881, Agent for Japan of American Bible Society.
