Fought for the Shogunate during Civil War; after surrendering was imprisoned for two years; was appointed an official of Hokkaido Colonization Board; later Secretary of the Public Works Department (since abolished); was President of Peers' School; was Minister at Seoul when Chino-Japanese War broke out; appointed to Privy Council soon after; is President of Tokyo Businessmen's Corporation; created Baron, 1900.
